Health Insurance for your Pet Protection

Health Insurance for your Pet Protection

Well, this is no surprise. Pet people are happier people. How much happier? Well, according to Psychology Today, a lot happier. Studies show pet parents have greater self-esteem, are less lonely, even more physically fit. Love you, Hero! That's my buddy. That is until your beloved pet gets sick and you have to deal with the emotional and financial stress of life-saving veterinary care. And Dr. Craig Galbraith, Chief Veterinary Advisor with Pethealth and 24PetWatch is here to help along with our pet guest, Champagne. Welcome.

Thank you for having us. She's being such a good girl. She's being awesome today. You're a beauty, yes. So, tell me Dr. Craig, how do you really deal with thinking about the well-being of your pet and also your pocketbook? Yeah, the biggest way is thinking about purchasing pet insurance. Absolutely. And what are some of the misconceptions people really have about pet insurance? Well, there's a few. The biggest is that people think that pre-existing conditions are covered.

And what that means is pre-existing condition is something that your pets been symptomatic for, diagnosed with, or treated for before you got the pet insurance. So, it's always best to insure as soon as possible to avoid having pre-existing conditions that aren't covered. The other one is that people don't think that they need pet insurance.

Right. So many. You don't know you need it until you really need it. So, people think that if they just take what they would pay in pet insurance premiums and set that aside every month that they can just rely on that to cover their veterinary bills. Right.

The problem with that is you don't know when these things are going to come up. So, if you've only been saving for four or five months, you may not have enough to cover that illness or accident that just occurred. And if you need ongoing treatment for that, then you've already used up your savings and you may actually have to dip into things and some of your other household bills may start to suffer as well. And the last thing is, Champagne here, she's a bit older. She's six. And people feel that if their pet is a bit on the older side that they can't get pet insurance, and that it is only for puppies and kittens. And that's just not the case. Good to know.

You can insure a pet at any age, the earlier the better, as always. And even if they do have pre-existing conditions, if they are older, there's always room for pet insurance because you never know. Accidents can always happen.

You've certainly had people come to you as a veterinarian with a tragic situation, a very very sick dog, and then you have to talk to them about medical cost. And that can be a really challenging situation, I'm sure. Absolutely. As a veterinarian, when you're dealing with uninsured pets, the conversation can be mostly about the finances which can be very difficult. I mean, when pets are sick, it's an emotional experience, a very stressful experience. But when you have pet insurance, the whole experience is transformed. It's not "What can I afford?", it's "What's best for my pet?", and it just changes everything for everybody. Of course. You're not put in that position of making a financial decision about your pet. You can actually... What are my options? What are my options? So, how do we determine which pet insurance policy is right for me or for our viewers.

And that's probably the biggest challenge with pet insurance. The one thing I can tell people is make sure you're comfortable asking lots of questions, asking what does the coverage actually look like, and for that coverage can I make changes to my co-payment, my deductible, so that I can get my premium down to where it can fit into my budget?

Right. You know, there's accident insurance, accident-only, accident and illness coverage. So, make sure you know what the policy looks like. Are there optional types of coverages available like wellness? Things like vaccines, microchips? That was what I was saying. What else can we do to protect our pet? I mean, I haven't done the microchip. That's terrible. I should go do it.

Yeah, for those who have pets already or are thinking about adopting a new pet, absolutely get the microchip. That's one of the best ways that we can keep those pets with us in our families healthier longer. So, where should folks go to find their new family member like Champagne? Well, the first place they should go is Petango.com. Pethealth has one of North America's largest online pet adoption websites.

Wonderful! I love the name. Petango. I can remember that. You go there and what happens when you go there? Well, you can just basically pick based on your area. So, you can set a radius for your search, what kind of pet you're looking for, or you can even set it to ask you lifestyle questions about yourself to help you choose what pet's best for you. And then they show you what's available in your area? Absolutely. It gives you the contact information for that shelter. So, you just reach out to them and then you make that connection. Oh my gosh. So last year, we adopted out over a million animals through our shelter partners. Wow! I don't know if I want to give my daughter this website site yet. (laughter).

Yeah, it can be addictive. Yeah, I know. Well we hope that we've inspired you to go out and adopt one of these beauties like Champagne. Millions of people have. All you have to do, as we just said, is go to Petango.com and you can find adorable adoptable pets in your area. Thank you so much for coming in. Thanks for having us. She is just, you've only met like two days, right? Yeah, and she's locally here from the Florida Humane Society.

New Dog Owners Thankful for Pet Insurance

New Dog Owners Thankful for Pet Insurance

She'd seen a flock of pigeons and ran at it and scared it and went through kind of a hole in a fence, in seconds she was gone. It all happened so quick, one minute she was there and the next she wasn't.

When we first heard about the pet insurance trial, she said, "Oh, by the way, if you guys want to do this it's free at the moment." She explained to us what it was. By the time we got downstairs it was maybe a minute later and found her there on the ground. I just panicked; I didn't know what to do.

Once they'd kind of gotten her in and we both calmed down enough to talk to, one of the girls said, "Okay, for her emergency fee and her x-rays we are quoting you $3,000 to $3,500. We kind of signed the paper saying, okay, yeah, that's manageable. They called us back a couple of hours later and said we've done the x-rays and she's broken bones in both her shoulders, wrists, all over her arms. And we're now quoting you between 8 and 12 thousand dollars. On our way home we remembered we had Trupanion but we weren't sure if Trupanion was going to cover the bill upfront because we'd only had it activated for a week at the moment. If we hadn't had insurance, we wouldn't have been able to go through with it.

She had a little over 5 hours surgery in total. And she had casts and they pinned her bones both on the inside and then on the outside. Hi this is Lisa. How can I help you? O.K. Kerry, so what I'll do... They kind of did all the legwork for us. It was very seamless. Based on car insurance or house insurance or anything else. You normally have to do everything when it comes to insurance, so we were--yeah, we were really surprised, actually. The specialist who operated on her was very surprised that she survived. It's really important to us to have her still. We weren't expecting her to fall 30 feet chasing a pigeon, which she still does. Funny enough, you'd think that she'd be turned off birds for life.

Should I Get Pet Insurance or a Wellness Plan for My Dog or Cat?

Should I Get Pet Insurance or a Wellness Plan for My Dog or Cat?

Preexisting conditions are generally not covered. According to the industry, the no. 1 issue pet insurance ends up covering, urinary tract infections in dogs and cats. Pricing depends on breed and is age? It does. So cats could be as little as $15.

But if you have a problem breed like french bulldogs, they have a lot of problem, that could cost you about $100 a month. Is there a certain cut point? The person in our story recommended you do it for the first two years. If they don't have any problems in the first two years, you might consider raising your deductible at that time. But if you have an old dog or cat who already has problems, don't get it at that point.

Is Pet Insurance Worth It?

Is Pet Insurance Worth It?

Guess what's one of the fastest- growing employee benefits?... Insurance for cats and dogs! One third of "fortune 500" companies now offer pet insurance. They include delta airlines... U-p-s... And microsoft. But what if your workplace doesn't offer pet insurance? Consumer reports looks at the pros and cons of buying it on your own.

When samantha boege's 4- year-old newfoundland needed surgery to repair a torn ligament, she ended up with more than 5- thousand dollars in medical bills. Samantha boege, dog owner says, "we are going to spend the money on surgery because she's a part of our family and we love her. But knowing what we know now, we are probably going to consider pet insurance." "dinner." had she bought a policy when she got the dog, it probably would have paid for itself.

But consumer reports found deciding whether or not to buy pet insurance, can be a tough call. Mandy walker, consumer reports says, "if you have a young animal that ends up with a serious illness or injury, it can really pay off. But if your pet is older, it can cost more and the coverage can be less comprehensive, so it may not be worth it." premiums vary widely and depend on the coverage you choose, the age of your pet and the breed.

The average premiums start at 16 dollars per month for a cat and 22 dollars per month for a dog. Mandy walker, consumer reports says, "dogs cost more to insure than cats because their medical treatment tends to be more purebreds cost more because they're susceptible to some hereditary conditions." there are a wide variety of providers. Most cover cats and dogs, but a few also insure birds and other animals. If you're considering a policy for your pet, start by reviewing plans online.

You should be able to get a free quote, which will allow you to compare cost versus coverage. And check how premiums might increase as your pet ages. If the idea of paying for pet insurance doesn't appeal to you -- consumer reports suggests you consider setting up a "dedicated savings account" -- and putting aside a "fixed amount of money" every month, so you have a reserve for unanticipated health care costs.

Pet insurance explained in 2 minutes

Pet insurance explained in 2 minutes

Once upon a time a clumsy little girl named Goldilocks broke into a house of bears and decided to eat their breakfast. “This porridge is too hot!” she shouted at no one in particular, and then she tripped and spilled the entire bowl on her dog Gary. Goldilocks rushed Gary to the vet for emergency porridge removal. To her dismay, the costs were so high that she couldn’t afford the final item: a custom-fitted dog toupé. So she cut off her own hair and  made a weave for Gary, and then they both looked like idiots.

Pet insurance would have helped Goldilocks and Gary. Pet insurance is like health insurance for your pet. It helps pay vet costs to treat accidental injuries and illnesses. There are two types of pet insurance plans. Accident plans help pay the cost to treat injuries like broken bones or the ingestion of harmful items. Comprehensive plans cover not just accidents but the treatment of illnesses like cancer or renal failure. Most plans don’t cover wellness and preventative care costs, but you can pay to add this coverage.

The day-to-day cost of pet care is usually affordable, but the cost of emergency treatment can be surprisingly high. A single surgical procedure can cost several thousand dollars. Pet insurance protects you from that kind of sudden expense, so you aren’t forced to choose between your pet’s health and your financial well being.

Here are some tips to make shopping for pet insurance easier. For better coverage, buy a comprehensive plan instead of an accident only plan. We also recommend you make sure your plan covers congenital and hereditary conditions. The moral of this story? Don’t end up like Goldilocks and Gary. Buy pet insurance.

Pet Insurance Keeps Your Pet Healthy

Pet Insurance Keeps Your Pet Healthy

Some of the biggest challenges today for pet owners is the cost of veterinary medicine. When the owner takes the dog or cat to the veterinarian, there are certain procedures that are necessary for the veterinarian to diagnose the accident or the illness, as well as certain procedures to cure or remedy the issue. Seeing a client knowing that they can provide the best care for their animal, in any circumstance, makes what we do worthwhile. We see animals that probably wouldn't be with us today if it wasn't for the owners having pet health insurance in place.

It really is fantastic for the animal. Pet parents want the best for their pets.  We want cats and dogs to be as healthy and happy as possible. We want them to have the best life. Unfortunately, sometimes unexpected accidents can happen. Pet health insurance really helps us prepare for those times so that our pets can be taken care of in the best way possible. Petsecure really helps out in our community. I mean, across Canada, we're involved in a number of things.

You know, we like to use our Facebook page and our online means for helping shelters to raise money, for helping shelters to adopt out pets that they may have rescued. Pets today are more like family members than they are just pets and by providing them with that peace of mind, we really think we've been able to help them at the end of the day.
